Attorney and Mediator Christopher C. Loutit
Attorney, mediator, and former Commissioner Christopher Loutit has tried and presided over hundreds of cases throughout Eastern North Carolina and defended appeals before the North Carolina Court of Appeals for 20 years.
Christopher has represented injured workers, Fortune 500 clients, the world's largest insurance companies, and small business owners at hearings at every level of the North Carolina Industrial Commission. He has appeared at hearings in criminal and civil penalty proceedings for failure to obtain workers' compensation insurance. Christopher is certified by the NCDRC as a Certified Superior Court Mediator.
Prior to founding the firm, Christopher served for over eight years at the North Carolina Industrial Commission, the state court system that regulates and decides all workers' compensation cases in North Carolina. Governor Pat McCrory appointed Christopher as a Commissioner of the Industrial Commission, and he was unanimously confirmed by the House and Senate chambers of the North Carolina General Assembly. He previously served as Chief Deputy Commissioner of the Commission from 2014 to 2016 and Chief Operating Officer from 2013 to 2014. In addition to authoring Opinions and Orders, he helped draft the Workers' Compensation Rules used by attorneys in practice today.
From 2021 to 2023, Christopher joined a large nationwide insurance defense firm, representing Fortune 500 clients, the world's largest insurance carriers, as well as municipalities in North Carolina. Christopher handled routine to catastrophic workers' compensation claims, appearing at mediations and hearings at every level of the Industrial Commission. During this time, he gained critical knowledge of how insurance adjusters value claims and how insurance carriers approach each case.
Christopher has presented to fellow attorneys, adjusters, risk managers, and the public at Continuing Legal Education and workers' compensation-oriented seminars before the North Carolina Bar Association, the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, the North Carolina Industrial Commission, the Associated Builders and Contractors of the Carolinas, and the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
He began his legal career at Johnson Lambeth & Brown in Wilmington, where he became a Partner. His practice focused in the areas of criminal defense and general civil litigation, representing clients in matters ranging from routine traffic violations to first degree murder. From 2006 to 2013, Christopher represented New Hanover County as a Title IV-D Enforcement Attorney.
Christopher grew up in Wilmington. He attended Cape Fear Academy and graduated from The Lawrenceville School, where he served as School Vice-President and a Prefect; received a B.A. in History from Trinity College, where his classmates elected him Senior Class Officer; and earned his law degree from American University. Christopher began his career on Wall Street as an Analyst in the Investment Banking Division of UBS in New York. He currently serves as a director and has been elected president of numerous corporate, non-profit, and legal-oriented boards in North Carolina. In his spare time, Christopher enjoys playing USTA tournaments and league tennis and spending time with his family around the beaches and waters of Wilmington.
